The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in late 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952. The University of Newcastle was granted autonomy by the NSW parliament in 1964. It became an independent university in 1965 and is now ranked in the top 200 universities in the world. Since its foundation, the staff, students, and leaders of the University have introduced unique ways of thinking and operating that have led to remarkable outcomes. The university operates multiple safe, friendly, and secure campuses, including Callaghan campus, Newcastle City campus, Central Coast campus, Singapore campus, and Sydney Campus. The Callaghan campus is a wonderful mix of award-winning, architecturally designed buildings, and world-class infrastructure across 140 hectares of natural bushland. The campus is the central hub for education, humanities, social science, and the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM), as well as nursing and health.
