It is one of the promising career opportunities for those who are particularly interested in designing footwear. As a Footwear Maker, you will be mainly involved in the manufacturing process of leather or non-leather (plastic, wood, jute, rubber etc.) footwear or footwear with substitutes of leather. You may be involved in the manufacture of sports, action, medicated or orthopaedic footwear for customers with leg or foot deformities. You may have to create the ‘last’ (the mould that is used to form the shoe), stitch pattern pieces together or fit soles and heels to the finished product.

A shoe designer is a type of fashion designer who focuses solely on creating footwear. A shoe designer can specialize in different footwear, such as sneakers, high-end heels, sandals, cold-weather shoes, athletic footwear and other specialty footwear. Shoe designers focus on both the function and comfort of the materials they choose and the aesthetic qualities of the design and coloring. Some designers, such as those creating athletic or outdoor footwear, may focus more on function than aesthetic appeal. You need to study drawings, be involved in preparing patterns, choosing materials or cutting parts manually following the patterns made. You have to press and bend parts to form the required shape, glue lining materials to leather parts and stitch them together. You may work to prepare leather hides of animals for manufacturing footwear, boots, shoes, sandals, clogs, moccasins similar footwear. You may be involved in the leather finishing sector also which deals with the production of finished industrial, lining or garment leather and includes processes like tanning, flaying, curing, scraping, bleaching, shearing, dyeing, embroidering or embossing.
