Dancers are performers who move their bodies in creative and expressive ways to entertain audiences. They can work in a variety of industries and genres, often performing to different kinds of music. Dancers typically work with instructors and can perform solo or as part of a group. A professional dancer works with directors, choreographers and other dancers to develop dance sequences for performances. Professional dancers work in a professional setting and are employed by large dance companies.

Successful dancers must have excellent balance, physical strength, and physical dexterity so that they can move their bodies without falling or losing their sense of rhythm. Dancers need artistic ability and creativity to express ideas through movement.

There are three basic types of professional dancers: commercial dancers, company dancers, and dance teachers.

Commercial dancers: As the name implies, commercial dancers earn their living dancing in commercial projects. This includes tours, music videos, movies, industrials, cruise ships, musicals, and, yes, actual commercials. Commercial dancers are freelancers and work on a project-by-project basis.

Company dancers: Company dancers are hired by a single company that they perform with (often for years on end).

Dance teachers: Don’t let the old saying “those who can’t do teach” trip you up here. Teaching dance very much counts as professionally working as a dancer.

Professional dancers are passionate, determined and persistent toward achieving their goals.
