The branch of medicine that is focused on the relief of pain in the perioperative period (i.e. before, during or after a surgical procedure) is known as anaesthesiology.
Anaesthesiologists are responsible for handling surgical
patients and their pain relief during procedures. During surgery,
anaesthesiologists administer anaesthetics (drugs) and adjust them as needed,
and they also monitor patients’ vital signs. In addition, they provide relief
for women during labor, for patients in intensive care and for chronic pain
patients.
