Kasthurba College for Women, the erstwhile Villianur College for Women, was established in the year 2005 under the aegis of the Pondicherry Society for Higher Education which is wholly funded by the Government of Puducherry, to cater to the higher educational needs of the women students hailing from rural backgrounds. As the region of Pondicherry previously had only one exclusive college for women, that too in the centre of the town, it was very difficult for students hailing from rural areas around Villianur to reach the portals of higher education even after scoring well in the higher secondary examination.
