CUET 2022 : All You Need To Know

02 May 2022 - 5min Read

The Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) or the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a computerised entrance exam for admission to 45 central universities in India wherein one’s Class 12 marks won’t matter. The universities can use the Class 12 marks as one eligibility criterion at best. It will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the first week of July, UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar announced on Monday. The application window will be open in the first week of April.

NO MORE HIGH CUT OFF MARKS

The trend of impossibly high cut-off marks in central universities such as Delhi University’s 100% cut-offs will now be history as the Class 12 marks will no more be a factor in central university admissions.

As per experts, this is because CBSE, CISCE and the different state boards in India all have different evaluation patterns which make it unfair for students applying to central universities with a wide diversity in evaluation patterns.

CUCET or CUET which will be held for the first time in July will do away with these inconsistencies and bring 45 central universities under the same ambit.

NTA will prepare a merit list after CUCET based on which the central universities will admit students. No common counselling will be carried out.

CUCET PAPER PATTERN

CUCET or CUET will be an MCQ-based computer-based test (CBT) based on NCERT textbooks. Incorrect answers will carry negative marking.

It will have three sections — Section A (the language test), Section B (the domain specific test) and Section C, which is optional, is a general test for vocational/open eligibility/cross stream test.

Section A (language test): Candidates will need to compulsorily appear for one language test in one of 13 languages -- Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, Odia and English.

Section B (domain-specific subjects): Candidates need to pick at most six domains out of the 27 offered which they want to study at an UG level.

These include the major subjects such as Mathematics, History, Accountancy, Economic, Computer Science, etc. and also relatively minor subjects such as performing arts, agriculture, fine arts, teaching aptitude, etc.

Candidates may also appear for subjects that they haven't studied at school. The domain-specific test will check the candidate's aptitude for the subjects.

Section C (vocational/open eligibility/cross stream test): This optional section has two subsections. Sub-section 1 will be a general aptitude test while Sub-section 2 will be a language test where students can pick from 19 uncommon languages not included in Section A such as Chinese, French, Japanese, Santhili, Sindhi, etc.

The entrance exam will be conducted in two shifts. In Shift 1, candidates will appear for the Section A tests for languages, two chosen domain subjects, and the general test.

In Shift 2, candidates will appear for tests for the other four domain subjects and an additional language test, if opted for.
